SPECIAL THANKS TO EPN MEMBER MONICA JOSHI FOR BRINGING TO OUR ATTENTION THIS AMAZING CHARITY TO OUR ATTENTION OUR EPN CHARITY SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH: A LEG TO STAND ON!
A Leg to Stand On is a Non-Profit Organization Providing Free Orthopedic Care To Children With Limb Disabilities In The Developing World. This amazing charity also provides free prosthetic limbs, orthotic devices, mobility aids, corrective surgery and rehabilitative care to children in the developing world who have lost limbs in traumatic accidents or suffer from congenital limb disabilities. All patients are children under the age of 19 whose families are unable to afford the care they need in order to live a self-sufficient life.
Their mission is to transform the lives of children with limb disabilities in the developing world by offering them the physical capabilities to access the opportunities and self-esteem earned through education, work and mobility.
The first clinic was opened in Ahmedabad, India in 2003, since then, they have provided free prosthetic limbs, corrective surgery and rehabilitation to more than 12,000 children in 20 developing countries; They are currently operating 11 programs in 10 of the world's poorest countries throughout Asia, Africa and Latin America. We also host training sessions to share emerging trends and best-practices in orthopedic care to local doctors, nurses and technicians – promoting sustainability and helping to bridge the gap in medical care between the developed and developing worlds. In the past 12 years, an additional 10,000 children have benefited from early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of limb deformities by ALTSO-trained health care providers.
Their work is simply phenomenal! Last year alone, they treated 1,934 children. Please visit www.altso.org/impact to see a breakdown of the services that they provided their patients in 2013, and to view their photo gallery of every single child treated – because of various supporters around the globe.
